Reconstructive Microsurgery and Craniofacial Microsurgery Fellowship

The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan offers a 1-year fellowship in Reconstructive Microsurgery and Craniofacial Microsurgery. The fellowship aims to equip fellows with advanced skills in both disciplines, bridging the gap to optimize patient outcomes. The program offers two positions annually.

Fellowship Highlights:

Microsurgical Experience: Fellows perform a wide variety of cases, including:

  • Breast Reconstruction: Perforator flap (DIEP, TUG,PAP, LAP), including **Robotic-Assisted DIEP Flap**
  • Head and Neck Free Flap Reconstruction: For congenital, traumatic, and oncologic defects
  • Pediatric Microsurgery
  • Lymphedema Reconstruction: LVA and supraclavicular VLNT, with experience utilizing high-frequency ultrasound to identify lymphatic channels
  • High-Level Extremity Free Flap Reconstruction / Limb Salvage

Fellows gain exposure to a diverse range of flaps, including radial forearm, fibula, medial sural artery perforator, medial femoral condyle, SCIP flap, and scapular/parascapular flaps. The average fellow performs 120-150 free flaps annually.

Craniofacial Microsurgery: Fellows may participate in:

  • Ian Jackson Craniofacial Clinic
  • Craniofacial Clinic in Flint, Michigan (underserved population)
  • Cleft Lip and Palate Repairs: 20-30 primary and 30-40 secondary repairs/revisions, including septorhinoplasty
  • Intracranial Procedures: 20-30 cases annually, including total vault reconstruction, endoscopic suturectomy, and cranial distraction
  • Complex Rhinoplasty, Mohs Reconstruction, and Orthognathic Surgery**, ensuring a well-rounded experience

Call and Privileges:

  • The U.S./ Canadian Fellow has attending privileges.
  • The International Fellow must hold a non-restricted Michigan medical license.

Mentor:

The fellowship is guided by Dr. Kongkrit Chaiyasate , an innovator in complex plastic surgery. Dr. Chaiyasate’s work has earned recognition from the **American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery , receiving  5 Best Case and Best Save awards. Additionally, the department has recruited expert faculty, including:

  • Dr. Jesse Selber, a world leader in Robotic DIEP Flap and complex reconstructive surgery
  • Dr. John Felder, a world authority in limb salvage

Candidates are selected through the San Francisco Match Program under Microsurgery.
